He had been having severe problems with his strength and balance due to a spinal situation and had already surprised the vet by responding exceptionally well to steroid treatments. Those treatments gave him another 8 months of high-quality life, but they couldn't keep up with his anemia and various other progressive aging factors. When he decided today (after already having an extremely bad week) that he didn't even want to try to stand up, we felt this was his request to move on. As always, he was at the door and ready to go long before we were really ready to let him.
We remember the bundle of fur our friend CAT brought into our lives, the murderous tail of doom, and his ability to fetch a tennis ball for (quite literally) hours, and we know that right now he is finally able to run around like a maniac once again.

Date: 2005-09-01 07:11 pm (UTC)One of my most pleasant memories of our first visit to you is sitting on the back porch for what must have been the whole morning, throwing a tennis ball for him to fetch, again and again. He'd bring it back, first bouncy and exuberant, then, as the morning wore on, slower and slower. But nonetheless, you could reinvigorate him just by lifting the ball to throw again.
*hugs* from both of us.
THE RAINBOW BRIDGE
Date: 2005-09-01 07:16 pm (UTC)Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Date: 2005-09-02 02:15 am (UTC)I actually read this earlier at work, but couldn't reply then because I was already tearing up (I'm a sap) and didn't want to cry at my desk.
Anyway, here's scritchies to the pup as was, and hugs to yourself.
*hug*
