Bye, Jack

Jack asleepJack came into our lives accidentally, while we were out of town, during a period we had decided to go without a dog, and became the best dog we ever had. He never met a stranger, loved to get attention when we took him for walks, and wanted to be wherever I was even if it was just the other side of the doorway.

He was an extremely happy dog who chased the kitties but would let them snuggle him in his bed. He was allowed to sleep on the furniture because it just wasn't fair that the cats got to be wherever they wanted when he had to be on the cold ground.

It's hard to believe we had him for 10 years and that he was estimated to be 7 when we got him. He got to be a tottery old man but never grumpy.

Gonna miss him.

How about something non-political for a change?

I spent last weekend while Brenda was at WindyCon putting up the hardibacker (again) in her bathroom preparatory to replacing the tile. 2 of 3 walls look fine, but the wall at the faucet end has the exact right spacing on the critical corner (where the wrap-around tile has to match up with the existing tile on the facing wall as well as the tile on the upper border has to match up with the rest of the main wall), but as it reaches the inside corner it cuts rather severely (almost 1/4") behind the existing main wall. That will make the tile at that upper border at that corner unable to rest properly on the existing wall.

Cursing silently (OK, you got me, not silently), I fetched the framing square to check the wall I'd put in. Again. For the umpty-umph time.

Sure enough, that wall is square. Completely square. Perfectly so, if I do say so myself.

The existing wall I'm trying to match to ... well, not so much ...

So now I have a dilemma. Do I un-square the new wall (using layers of hardiboard and grinding them down in some semblance of a smooth angle)? Or do I pull down the plastic cover on the existing wall and grind the (hard as rock) plaster down to make it square. Ish. ?

Both of which will be extremely messy, very hard to get right, and - oh, yeah - have to get done by next Wednesday. As in, the day before Thanksgiving.

Our deep freeze has a wonky lower drawer that tends to stick out just enough to block the door from closing, so we always check very carefully that the door has been closed tightly. This usually works.

Obviously, this did not work the last time someone (likely me) got into the bottom drawer. I went down to the basement for some tools this morning and smelled something off, which led me to the freezer with the door ajar and the thawed meat and containers of stock inside.

Almost everything is now in the trash. I did check some things that were buried deeply enough with an instant read thermometer. I decided that a surface temperature external of packaging of 38 degrees F or less could be considered "refrigerated" and 30 degrees F or less considered "frozen" - in this way I was able to save the duck liver (refrigerated), two large pork shoulders (frozen), a box of Omaha Steak burgers (frozen), and some packaged quail obtained some time ago as a gift but not yet used (frozen). Everything else has gone.

The freezer is completing the defrost now. I will be disinfecting it completely, then disinfecting the basement floor around it and the floor drain that took in the runoff. Right now it does kind of look a bit like Dexter forgot to lay down the plastic sheeting...

Look, boys and girls! It's a Real LiveJournal post!

Carrying a ton of songbooks in luggage is simply not practical. Using paper lead sheets in windy outdoor situations also lacks a certain je ne sais quoi. And we now have 4 tablets between us (two Android and two legacy HP tablets with a version of Cyanogenmod). This means it is time to start the conversion process.

There's another good reason for me to do so personally - any of my songs prior to about 1990 only exist in a single paper copy from an old print out of Apple ][ files that no longer exist. Should my songbook find itself permanently redirected, they would be lost forever. In some cases, this would not be a bad thing (they can't all be winners), but in others it would be very painful to reconstruct.

We've standardized on Songbook for now - it has transpose, zoom, and auto-scroll features that we need for performing. At some point we might go to bluetooth pedals, but that adds back some of the bulk we're saving.

After some practical experimentation and attempts to streamline my process (Brenda is doing it differently, of course), I'm doing the following:

Scan old paper copies into a text file (OCR gets a little confused on Letter Gothic but it is still faster than retyping)
Edit text to clean up scanos and position chords
Use ChordSmith program to convert to Chord Pro (naming convention: SongName_yymmddBill.pro)
Optional: Create "one chorus" version for pdf/printing
Create PDF using Songsheet Generator (unless I have multiple subtitles, which Songsheet Generator can't handle. Then I use a PC version of Songbook)
Print backup hardcopy from the PDF
Copy .pro file to central Songbook directory
Copy Songbook directory to shared directory.
Download to tablet.

So, this is going to be EASIER to keep track of? Ah, well, the price of flexibility.

I am through the "B" section of my own songs and as needed we have converted songs we play by others as well but not in any alphabetical order. Yet.

Good night's sleep - check.

Scraping remaining ice off walkways and driveway - in progress.
Getting frozen doors open on Miata - ain't gonna happen.
Getting Dad's Blazer started that wouldn't even try to turn over before we left for GAFilk - surprisingly easy.
Putting air in flat tire of Blazer that used to only trend low but was completely flat when we got back - must have been working but was going out somewhere as fast as it went in.
Changing tire for spare - complete with the help of many words and phrases not appropriate for public airing.
Putting air in spare to make sure it is the right pressure - bleeping cap won't come off the bleeping valve.
Limping to tire store for repair of old tire - yet to come.

Oh ... and at some point today I really should, you know, work

After a ruthless evaluation of the finances, we found we have scraped together enough for the plane tickets but not enough for the hotel and train travel. That, plus the payoffs remaining from the 3 weeks in London and Ireland this summer, means it is the better part of valor to refrain from attending Con27ilkin.

We've been steady attendees and hope to be back next year. Hope everyone has a fine time!

Guess that means the beer order can be reduced...

A bit of an unusual December for us. No kids or grandkids for Christmas (the youngest and his wife are serving as foster parents in Georgia and, unfortunately, that means they can't take their foster child out of state for holidays). My father is in town but is unable to drive until he gets his license reinstated from a medical incident last May, so I've spent a lot of my time being shuttle driver. [livejournal.com profile] ladyat's mother is with us and it has been working out very well, but it does mean some shuffling of activities. My sister and her husband are in town but I am participating in the Indy Winter Solstice so I will miss a lot of time with her due to rehearsals and performances. We did, however, get the tree and decorations up a lot earlier than most years so it has actually felt a little more like Yule than in the past.

It is in this time of darkness, when we think we should be contemplating the inner world, that we find ourselves at our busiest. We often decry the frantic pace, but perhaps it is closer to what our ancestors did than we would like to remember - every day was a struggle to survive, traveling miles to find meat for the table, searching for the last dried fruits or roots to fill cold and hungry bellies - never mind gathering wood for that all-important life-sustaining fire. Our problem may be the way we go about it - mindlessly, with the only thoughts being those of obligation, inconvenience, and inadequacy. Maybe we shouldn't despair that we can't be 100% contemplative at this time of year - rather, we should make certain that we are fully engaged in everything we do, dropping those things in which we cannot take joy, comfort, or at least satisfaction that we have prepared for another year.

It all seems a bit philosophical for a post whose purpose is simply to wish you all joy in whatever way you celebrate the Returning of the Light. Every year I find I love these words more and more (and acknowledge the help of [livejournal.com profile] cflute in giving them their final polish):

- as the sun increases, so may your joys increase.
- as the nights become shorter, so may your sorrows shrink.
- as those you love surround you, feel my love there as well.
- may you be blessed by your Gods, be they within or without.
- may all your dearest dreams come to you in time.

Joyous Yule, Merry Christmas, Blessed Hannukah, Happy Dong Zhi, and an Inspirational Kwanzaa to you all. May the best of this year follow you into the next.

Went to see Guardians of the Galaxy last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it - fun, irreverent, and nodding often toward the Jim Starlin Marvel Universe, which has always been my favorite. As I said to [livejournal.com profile] ladyat, "Who would have thought you would see (*spoiler character*) in a comedy?"

Have been frantically trying to get tracks laid down for Bed & Breakfast's upcoming CD, which I'd love to have available by September 13 because, well, that's our next gig. Doesn't look like it is going to happen, though, mainly due to being away from home for 2-1/2 prime weeks. We might get everything recorded, but the mixing is likely not to be finished (nor will the package design).

Generally suffering from short-timer-disease and am really ready to leave for LonCon3, Shamrokon, and (perhaps more importantly) The Great British Beer Festival. Don't know when I'll be able to fit in time to learn the part for my emergency chorus role in "Before the Dawn"...

We enjoyed Detcon1 so much we decided to share the song we wrote about the unofficial theme of the con. Please download for free or, if you feel so inclined, pay a little into the virtual tip jar...

I posted this on Facebook, but the embedded player isn't working very well over there.

We had a fantastic time at Detcon1. Thanks to all the members of the concom who worked so hard and were such excellent hosts! Thanks to all the con members who showed up for our various events and even sang along to "Where's My Flying Car" at Closing Ceremonies! Thanks to everyone who bought pre-orders for our upcoming CDs!

We will refrain from asking when the Worldcon bid will be ... just shut up and take our money.

The target is to have presales (with bonus preliminary mix tracks!) at Detcon, LonCon, and Shamrokon, with CDs finalized before OVFF.

Still need to get cover art, though a couple of irons are in the fire.

Status so far:

Recorded and in preliminary mix stage:

Women With Drums (recorded live at ConFlikt 2012, for And They Said It Wouldn't Last)
Jug of Punch (archive recording, for Bye and Bye)
Caretakers (remix from Owling at the Moon, for And They Said It Wouldn't Last)

Mostly done but need a few more tracks laid down:

Une Chanson Sans Amour (new recording, for And They Said It Wouldn't Last)
This Turn of the Wheel (mostly remix from Owling at the Moon, for And They Said It Wouldn't Last)
Drinking with the Man in the Moon (mostly tracks recorded live at ConFlikt 2012, for And They Said It Wouldn't Last)

The rest are waiting recording to start (or track processing to take place for a few more songs from ConFlikt) and, in a couple of cases, copyright contacts.

The Bedlam House studio has been ripped to shreds (figuratively) and rebuilt (somewhat literally), using an M-Audio ProjectMix interface borrowed from the infinitely accommodating [livejournal.com profile] billroper. Turning a closet into a fairly sound efficient booth, complete with acoustic treatment that at least ameliorates the worst offenses, means we may actually be able to crank some things out. Assuming, that is, we have time between taking music lessons, playing at newly discovered local Irish sessions, and ... oh, yeah, that work thing.
bedlamhouse: (beer)
On top of parent health issues (my father is back in the hospital after another low pressure issue and kidney problems, [livejournal.com profile] ladyat's mother has had enough problems living alone that we've convinced her to come live with us this fall), the small gods of the household have become disgruntled with us and decided to shower us (literally) with unblessings.
