Our garden soil is so rich and thick that we've found that we can't grow skinny carrot varieties (the Nantes types). Instead we need to plant the Chantenay types that are broader and shorter. Although the Thumbelinas were a little extreme: they grew very well, but were a royal pain when you took a vegetable peeler to them..
