*sigh*

Started the day by pumping in construction adhesive and putting the soap dish in. I got the towel bar, shower rod, and shower nozzle bracket back in place, then ran into Problem.

The thickness of the wall (or, more precisely, the half-inch less thickness due to being, you know, actually square) at the faucet handles and spout has left a gap behind the handle trim and spigot. Oh, well, it's temporary, so Mr. Caulk Is Your Friend.

Unfortunately, when installing the spout, the plastic insert adapting the 1/2" cast iron pipe to the 3/4" spout stripped. I had a bit of panic because I was at first unsure if this was a standard piece or something special created for the house at some point (which would necessitate calling the plumber to replace the pipe and probably tearing out some of the tile so recently replaces), but after cleaning off the pipe it became clear that this was an adapter. Trip to Menards - my usual go-to for things appropriate for 135-year-old houses - was unsuccessful, as in the plumbing area they have not heard of such a thing. I got a brass adapter that I was able to use to clean out the rusted threads and confirm that all that was necessary was an adapter, though using it would cause the spout to stick out a further inch or so from the wall.

Today, I will be using Google-fu to try to find said adapter - and it is possible it was at Menards in the department where they actually sell said spouts, which is not the same as the plumbing department. I am also contemplating getting a die for 1/2" NPT thread so I can carefully screw it onto the existing pipe, cut off the offending extra length of pipe so the spout will install flush, then back out the die to re-cut the damaged threads. I know I can do this with a nut on softer materials, I'm just not confident it will work on cast iron.

So, unfortunately, [livejournal.com profile] ladyat will not have her shower back tomorrow as originally thought...

2016 has begun with the losses of a number of figures who were inspirational to many in my generation, whether just from the giving of pure enjoyment or from the actual influence on how we create or represent art or ourselves.

Grieving is a personal thing, and how we handle news of this sort is as well. We never expect those we look up to to leave us - it is human nature to consider the world we know now as immutable and that we will continue to be surrounded by our mentors, whether direct or indirect, and by those we love.

However, I would encourage those of this generation to pause for a moment before sending out the now-clichéd "this year is fired" or "2016 you suck" or "please stop it" responses.

We are of an age where these losses are inevitable. We do our own mental states a grave disservice if we constantly consider our present ruined by such events, because we will simply not be able to avoid them and we therefore guarantee ourselves misery now after now after now. EVERY year will be fired. EVERY year will suck. EVERY year will have people passing whom we admired and followed.

That doesn't mean we don't feel deep sorrow at such passings. It simply means that by defining the moments of our lives solely in terms of such losses is a poor way to honor those memories.

We have people and events that mean much more to us than those public figures do. Perhaps we should save the ultimate tagging of a year as irretrievably broken for their passing or illnesses - for those things that are the most important to us.

The year and The season have been a bit hectic (which frankly seems more usual than not these days), but before time slips completely away I wanted to make sure to wish you my now truly traditional blessing for the season and wish you all joy in whatever way you celebrate the Returning of the Light. Every year I find I love these words more and more (and acknowledge the help of [livejournal.com profile] cflute in giving them their final polish):

- as the sun increases, so may your joys increase.
- as the nights become shorter, so may your sorrows shrink.
- as those you love surround you, feel my love there as well.
- may you be blessed by your Gods, be they within or without.
- may all your dearest dreams come to you in time.

Whether you have already celebrated your own Festival of Light or are preparing for it yet to come, may all the blessing of the returning Sun keep you well, prosperous, and happy in the coming year.

Bye, Jack

Jack asleepJack came into our lives accidentally, while we were out of town, during a period we had decided to go without a dog, and became the best dog we ever had. He never met a stranger, loved to get attention when we took him for walks, and wanted to be wherever I was even if it was just the other side of the doorway.

He was an extremely happy dog who chased the kitties but would let them snuggle him in his bed. He was allowed to sleep on the furniture because it just wasn't fair that the cats got to be wherever they wanted when he had to be on the cold ground.

It's hard to believe we had him for 10 years and that he was estimated to be 7 when we got him. He got to be a tottery old man but never grumpy.

Gonna miss him.

How about something non-political for a change?

I spent last weekend while Brenda was at WindyCon putting up the hardibacker (again) in her bathroom preparatory to replacing the tile. 2 of 3 walls look fine, but the wall at the faucet end has the exact right spacing on the critical corner (where the wrap-around tile has to match up with the existing tile on the facing wall as well as the tile on the upper border has to match up with the rest of the main wall), but as it reaches the inside corner it cuts rather severely (almost 1/4") behind the existing main wall. That will make the tile at that upper border at that corner unable to rest properly on the existing wall.

Cursing silently (OK, you got me, not silently), I fetched the framing square to check the wall I'd put in. Again. For the umpty-umph time.

Sure enough, that wall is square. Completely square. Perfectly so, if I do say so myself.

The existing wall I'm trying to match to ... well, not so much ...

So now I have a dilemma. Do I un-square the new wall (using layers of hardiboard and grinding them down in some semblance of a smooth angle)? Or do I pull down the plastic cover on the existing wall and grind the (hard as rock) plaster down to make it square. Ish. ?

Both of which will be extremely messy, very hard to get right, and - oh, yeah - have to get done by next Wednesday. As in, the day before Thanksgiving.
